Stan Hargreaves - 2009
This was the inaugural occasion where the trophy was played for. The afternoon was organised on a "drive" basis where players drew for rink and position.
The League Secretary, John Bennett, addressed the group after the play had finished....
....First, I
would like to say thank you to all those who have taken part in this
inaugural Stan Hargreaves Trophy competition. We hope that you have
enjoyed the afternoon.
Then, thanks to the Committee and Groundsman of Legionnaires Bowls Club
for allowing us to use their facilities. You have been admirable hosts.
And - you have generously accepted just £10 for expenses.
Thanks also to Pete Onyon and Ron Brackenbury for their efforts in
organising the afternoon.
Last, but by no means least, thanks to those volunteers who have served
refreshments. Particularly generous were Greeta and Rita who provided
the ingredients of a lovely tea.
An event like this relies on the good will and the time that so many
individuals are prepared to put in and should never be taken for
granted.
Thank you everyone!
Stan Hargreaves
Many here will be very much aware of the monumental contribution that
Stan made to bowls.
He was a faithful member of the Scotchman Bowls Club where he was widely
regarded as "Mr Reliable". He served on many committees and helped raise
money for the club on a regular basis. He was a friend and inspiration
to all he met.
Stan also became very much involved with the Woodhall Spa and District
Friendly League. He served on the Committee for several years and was
instrumental in insisting on the less formal and more friendly way in
which the League is organised.
I have spoken to many people who knew Stan and we could be here for many
long hours if I were to relay all the lovely stories I have heard.
Suffice to say, Stan was one of that very rarest of men about whom
nobody had a bad word to say.
I am sure that he would be tickled pink - and very proud indeed - to
know that this Trophy is in his name. In turn, we are proud to be able
to commemorate his memory in this way.
It is the intention of the Woodhall Spa League to hold this competition
annually - earlier in the season and hosted around the clubs. This will
be subject to approval at the AGM in due course.
Congratulations to the winners - but we also need to recognise the part
played by all the teams present. Well done, everyone!
